The Quiet
Light Leaves
Behind.

Landscape, architecture, and the small things that grow between them. Photographed slowly, in natural light, mostly before the day has properly started.

About

I don’t go out to find pictures. I go out early, walk until the light changes, and wait for something ordinary to become worth keeping.

Portrait

People, at the distance
the light allowed.

Figures at a distance, or against a window. Almost none of them are looking at the camera, which is usually why they are in the frame at all.

Someone standing in the fog
A silhouette against the grid
Two, in the white
Reading, by the leaded window
At the window, late light
The hill path, in a green coat
A dim room, one window
A crowd, thinned by haze
Down the track, between bare trees
A shadow and the shape of the light
At the edge of the rock
Against the lit doorway

Snap

On the way to
somewhere else.

Photographs made on foot, without a plan. Most of them are of things I only noticed because I was walking slowly.

A bird low over the surf
Thin lines on a pale wall
A pony, turned away
Apples on a bare branch
A swing frame through glass
A pier at dusk
A plane between the cloud layers
Wooden benches, in rows
Behind a blurred window
An interior, from behind
Waiting, against the glass
Faders in a dark room

Landscape

The hours when the land
is still deciding.

Fog, water and weather. Almost all of these were made before the day had properly started.

Autumn trees on still water
A single tree on a slope
Fog between the trunks
Pale flowers on a dark slope
Backlit trees in mist
Hills and pampas grass
Stakes in the water at dusk
A maple turning, red behind
A flooded forest floor
Woodland from above
A row of trees, through leaves
Masts on the hill, a cow below

A building keeps the same shape all day. It is not the same photograph.

Architecture

Concrete, glass, and the
one hour that crosses them.

Buildings photographed for their light rather than their plan. I go back to the same places at different hours.

An interior opening onto green
Stairs, platforms, cloud
Handrails, and the sign for B1
Branch shadows on concrete
Concrete, grass, a figure passing
The underside of a structure
White ribs over a glass hall
A gap, and the light in it
A weathered metal facade
A long structure in fog
Sun through a ruined frame
A cut face in the rock

Plant

Small things,
held in the shallowest focus.

Close range, wide open. What stays sharp is usually much smaller than what I was looking at.

White flowers among grasses
A flower through haze
A seed head, gone over
A pale flower among dew
A grass stalk against cloud
Buds at close range
Grass plumes against the sun
Red flowers at close range
Dew and round light
Daisies, wide open
One stem in the flare
Pink, half behind the blur

Book a shoot

It starts with
a place and an hour.

Tell me where it is and what it’s for. If I’m not the right person for it, I’ll say so and point you at someone who is.

Thank you. That is with me.

I read every message myself, and I answer within a couple of days. If the light you want only happens at a particular hour, say so — it changes what I suggest.
